About FAME

The Foundation for African Medicine and Education (FAME) is a mission-driven organization committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centered healthcare in rural northern Tanzania. Founded over 20 years ago, FAME started as a mobile medical clinic. Since then, FAME has evolved into a district level hospital with an Outpatient Clinic, Inpatient Ward, Surgical Theaters, Maternity Center with Neonatal Services, Laboratory and Radiology Departments and a robust Health Education and Continuing Medical Education (CME) program.

Today, FAME serves more than 37,000 patients each year, providing comprehensive medical care to a catchment area of 2.9 million people. Our team includes over 200 Tanzanian staff members who are supported by a network of local and international medical professionals working together to deliver compassionate, evidence-based care in one of the most underserved regions of the country.

About the Role

FAME is seeking a highly motivated, creative and self-directed Digital Media Manager to lead our communications strategy and digital content creation. This role is ideal for a compelling storyteller and skilled visual communicator who can work independently, thrives in a fast-paced and mission-driven environment and brings both strategic insight and hands-on execution to our media efforts.

Based full-time in Karatu, Tanzania, and reporting to the US Managing Director, the Digital Media Manager will be responsible for producing powerful multimedia content, managing FAME’s digital presence, and helping drive donor engagement and retention through thoughtful, strategic storytelling.

This role requires someone who embraces feedback, is proactive and independent in their work and is excited to contribute to an organization that values continuous learning and collaborative leadership. We are looking for a unique combination of technical skills, strategic thinking and mission alignment. Independence, initiative and accountability are essential — this position operates with significant autonomy while remaining tightly aligned with US-based team.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Communications & Content Planning:

  • Lead the development and execution of FAME’s annual communications calendar, including digital strategy, campaign planning and content priorities. Work with the US team to ensure that the communications strategy and calendar aligns with the annual fundraising calendar.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to grow FAME’s voice and visibility across platforms — including email marketing, social media and print media.
  • Regularly evaluate communications performance, using analytics and stakeholder feedback to iterate and improve.

Content Creation & Storytelling:

  • Capture compelling photography and video content that showcases FAME’s programs, patients (with consent) and staff — always with a focus on dignity, ethics and cultural respect.
  • Generate high-impact multimedia content (written, visual and video) for a variety of uses: FAME’s website, social media platforms, monthly e-newsletters, donor updates, annual reports and campaigns.
  • Write, edit and design creative materials that reflect FAME’s values and engage diverse audiences. This role is primarily communicating for an international, mostly American audience.

Social Media & Digital Engagement:

  • Create and manage dynamic social media content across platforms, which elevates FAME’s voice and builds an engaged online community.
  • Coordinate with the US-based Development Manager to align social media campaigns with fundraising objectives.
  • Maintain an organized, searchable photo and media archive.

Cross-Team Collaboration:

  • This role works daily with the Tanzanian team at FAME Hospital and requires partnering with department heads, doctors, nurses and volunteers to identify and develop powerful stories that represent the breadth and heart of FAME’s work.
  • Work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to communicate with international volunteers and build post-visit engagement.
  • Collaborate with local and regional program partners to amplify shared initiatives, events and campaigns.
  • Contribute to data collection and impact reporting as needed for communications, grant reporting or monitoring and evaluation purposes.

Innovation & Growth:

  • Bring a fresh perspective to FAME’s communications, identifying gaps and opportunities for growth.
  • Lead or co-lead special projects to evolve FAME’s messaging in line with best practices in nonprofit storytelling and global health communications.
  • Keep abreast of emerging trends in global health communications and digital media and apply insights to FAME’s strategy.

Qualifications

Required:

  • At least 2 years of professional communications experience – work in healthcare, international development or nonprofit communications is a plus.
  • Exceptional writing, editing and visual storytelling skills.
  • Proven experience creating engaging social media and digital content.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute communications strategies.
  • Strong photography and videography skills, including editing and post-production.
  • Familiarity with graphic design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva).
  • Highly organized with strong project management and self-direction skills.
  • Ability to live and work in a rural setting with cultural humility and adaptability.
  • A growth mindset, openness to feedback and deep respect for FAME’s mission and team.

Preferred:

  • East African candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Prior experience working or living in East Africa.
  • Swahili proficiency.

Compensation

  • Competitive monthly salary based on experience.
  • Health benefits provided for term of service.
  • Housing provided on FAME campus.
  • Travel/relocation stipend upon joining FAME.
  • Required visas and permits for employment (for staff moving from overseas).
